Writing Gadgets with Google Mashup Editor

Posted by Brian Shih, Google Gadgets Team

Do you use the Google Mashup Editor? Did you know you can use GME to create a mashup and then distribute it as a gadget on iGoogle, Google Desktop, and more? Jason Cooper, from the GME team, has a great article on how to use the Mashup Editor to create and publish Google Gadgets.

If you're already using GME, this is a great way to share your mashup with millions of iGoogle users by releasing your mashup as a gadget. Check out some of the existing mashups in the gallery!

I thought I'd let you all know about Google I/O, a developer event upcoming on the 28th and 29th of May at Moscone West in San Francisco. There are a lot of exciting opportunities at the event, including: breakout sessions, code labs, fireside chats, tech talks, and sessions that you, the developers, can hold yourselves.

The talks will cover a variety of topics, many of which focus on gadget-related technology. Be sure not to miss "Apache Shindig: Make Your Social Site an OpenSocial Container" and the related code lab. The two discussions will focus on deploying OpenSocial applications, but Shindig can be used to serve gadgets on your site, social or not.

Introducing the Google Webmaster Team

We’re pleased to introduce the Google Webmaster Team as contributors to the Webmaster Central Blog. As the team responsible for tens of thousands of Google’s informational web pages, they’re here to offer tips and advice based on their experiences as hands-on webmasters.

Back in the 1990s, anyone who maintained a website called themselves a “webmaster” regardless of whether they were a designer, developer, author, system administrator, or someone who had just stumbled across GeoCities and created their first web page. As the technologies changed over the years, so did the roles and skills of those managing websites.

Around 20 years after the word was first used, we still refer to ourselves as the Google Webmaster Team because it’s the only term that really covers the wide variety of roles that we have on our team. Although most of us have solid knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and other web technologies, we also have specialists in design, development, user experience, information architecture, system administration, and project management.

Part of the Google Webmaster Team, Mountain View

In contrast to the Google Webmaster Central Team—which mainly focuses on helping webmasters outside of Google understand web search and how things like crawling and indexing affect their sites—our team is responsible for designing, implementing, optimizing and maintaining Google’s corporate pages, informational product pages, landing pages for marketing campaigns, and our error page. Our team also develops internal tools to increase our productivity and help to maintain the thousands of HTML pages that we own.

We’re working hard to follow, challenge and evolve best practices and web standards to ensure that all our new pages are produced to the highest quality and provide the best user experience, and we’re constantly evaluating and updating our legacy pages to ensure their deprecated HTML isn’t just left to rot.

We want to share our work and experiences with other webmasters, so we recently launched our @GoogleWebTeam account on Twitter to keep our followers updated on the latest news about our projects, web standards, and anything else which may be of interest to other webmasters, web designers and web developers. We’ll be posting here on the Webmaster Central Blog when we want to share anything longer than 140 characters.

Before we share more details about our processes and experiences, please let us know if there’s anything you’d like us to specifically cover by leaving a comment here or by tweeting @GoogleWebTeam.

Hotel Sues Google Over Libelous Autocomplete Results

Google is on the receiving end of a lawsuit over some of its autocomplete suggestions for an Irish hotel.

The Ballymascanlon House Hotel, Golf and Leisure Club says several potential guests, including brides planning their weddings at the historic estate, have been shocked and troubled to see the word “receivership” pop up during Google searches for the hotel’s name.

The term indicates some or part of the hotel’s assets, including property, are being held by a custodian pending the repayment of secured debts. Receivership is used by creditors in insolvency legislation; in some cases, the administration of the debtor’s business might even be turned over to the receiver.

Google’s autocomplete suggestions have gotten the company into legal hot water in the past, generally with individuals who see potentially damaging terms following their names in search queries. The company has a history of subtle censorship of certain autocomplete terms, especially those related to online piracy. So we do know the company has the ability to alter those suggestions.

Perhaps the company might consider a DMCA takedown notice-like process for automating complaints about autocomplete suggestions; it might save the search giant a boatload of similar lawsuits in the future.
